Google 'X Phone' : Competition with Apple and Samsung

Google's Motorola reportedly plans to develop an advanced "X Tablet".

Google-owned Motorola plans to release a sophisticated new smartphone next year, the Wall Street Journal reports.

As the demand for smartphones grows even larger, tech companies won't be holding back trying to grab a larger portion of the lucrative market. As Apple's iPhone continues to dominate other handsets, Google looks like it will attack the iPhone with its very own "X Phone."

The X Phone is a joint venture between Google and Motorola, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"Engineers at Motorola are hard at work on a sophisticated handset, to be released next year, that parent Google Inc. hopes will provide more potent competition for devices like Apple Inc.'s iPhone," The Wall Street Journal reports.

Google and Motorola are hoping that more powerful camera features will help draw customers away from Apple's hip brand and embrace Android photo features. It's also safe to assume the X phone will run the latest version of Google's Android operating system.

The project is running into some trouble, however. According to the Wall Street Journal report, battery life issues and supply-chain management problems are holding back the X Phone.

The X Phone will apparently release in 2013, and will be followed by a Google-Motorola "X Tablet."

If this is the case, then it looks like Google is looking to build another brand in order to take the iPhone brand head on. Google's Nexus brand has done incredibly well, so it will be interesting to see where this "X" lineup would fit into Google's long-term plans.

Google acquired Motorola for $12.5 billion earlier this year in an effort to bolster its wireless patents and strengthen its mobile presence.
